If you are like most Southern Californians who are tired of being swindled by contractors who milk you for every dime you can muster, we have a few suggestions for you to consider when finding a quality, professional contractor.

Research your contractor-Hiring the "independent handyman" can be risky, and the "large-scale builder" is not always available or worthy of your time and budget. Investing the time to find the right contractor is paramount for a job done well and time well spent.

Word of mouth—Many contractors say that “word of mouth” from satisfied customers is their best form of advertising, so begin the process by asking friends and relatives if they know a good tradesman they’d recommend.

Look Around-Check out your neighborhood. If you notice a fabulous project your neighbor has just completed that catchers your eye, ask the homeowners if they’re pleased with the results. Check out houses similar to yours that are or look like they have been recently renovated. Most of the time contractors specialize in specific types of projects, while others work on newer homes or older home restorations. Look for someone who is going to do the kind of work you want done at your own home. If the property is moving along and well-maintained, that is a good sign that the contractor is on top of things and knows his trade.

Surf the Web—The Internet can offer another approach to finding a local contractor. Type “contractor referral” in any search engine, and you’ll find numerous websites designed as a matchmaker between homeowners and plumbers, remodelers, builders or other home service professionals. The service is usually free to customers.

Check your Yellow Pages-Check the advertisements in your local Yellow Pages to see which contractor ads most appeal to you. You will get a better idea about the the values of a contracting company by the kinds of things the ad talks about. How long have they been in business? What do they specialize in? What kind of services do they provide? Do they provide references? Pick up the phone and don't be afraid to ask questions. You have a vested interest in the kind of people you will have in your home during your remodel process!

Visit your local Home Improvement Store—Get an idea of the type of materials you are looking for and walk the aisles. You'll notice “Installed Price” signs on most of the various building materials, appliances and fixtures they sell. Most of the items have a label that reads "installed for $XX.XX per square foot" This can help you make some determinations as to the dollar value to the actual labor cost. Keep in mind that this does NOT include the preparation time involved in removing the existing flooring, so that must be considered in the overall project.

Hire a licensed contractor-we've all heard the horror stories about friends that didn't hire a licensed contractor. Your best bet is to budget your project with a licensed professional that is at the very least, held accountable to the State of California if not to you personally.
